And what it is not
Hybrid flooring is not laminate. Laminate has a fiberboard (HDF) core that swells when water gets in; hybrid flooring’s stone-composite core is 100% waterproof through its full thickness. If water performance is the reason your customer asks for hybrid, make sure the quotation says “SPC / rigid core” - some price lists blur the two.

Is hybrid flooring the same as SPC flooring?
Yes. 'Hybrid flooring' is the trade name used across Australia and New Zealand for rigid-core flooring - in practice SPC (stone-plastic composite) planks. The construction is identical: rigid limestone-PVC core, printed decor, wear layer and click system. International suppliers list the same product as SPC flooring or rigid-core vinyl plank.
Is hybrid flooring waterproof?
True hybrid/SPC flooring is 100% waterproof through the core - not just water-resistant on the surface. It is the standard choice for open-plan living areas, kitchens and laundries. Be aware that laminate flooring (HDF core) is a different product and is not waterproof, however convincing the wood look.
Which wear layer should I specify for the Australian market?
Most Australian residential hybrid ranges use a 0.5 mm wear layer; 0.3 mm suits budget programs and bedrooms, and 0.55 mm is for heavy commercial. Pair it with a 4-6 mm core depending on the price point - 5 mm + 0.5 mm is the volume specification.
