SPC flooring thickness ranges from 3.5mm up to 8mm. Unlike laminate - where thickness mostly affects feel underfoot - in SPC, thickness directly dictates wear layer, acoustic performance, and the type of subfloor required. Choosing the wrong thickness is a common cause of post-installation complaints.
3.5mm SPC is the entry point. With a 0.3mm wear layer, it suits light residential use - guest bedrooms, home offices, and short-term rentals. The thin profile requires a perfectly flat subfloor; any imperfection will telegraph through. It is the cheapest option and the lightest to ship.
4mm SPC is the volume seller for budget residential projects. The 0.3mm wear layer handles normal family traffic, and the rigidity is sufficient for most subfloors. Pair it with a 1.0mm IXPE underlayment for acceptable acoustic performance. This thickness dominates apartment renovation projects in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
5mm SPC with a 0.5mm wear layer is the sweet spot for premium residential and light commercial use. The extra thickness absorbs minor subfloor irregularities, and the heavier wear layer resists scuffs in retail and office settings. This is our most recommended specification for hotel guest rooms.
6mm SPC is the standard for commercial projects. With a 0.5mm or 0.55mm wear layer, it stands up to constant foot traffic, rolling chairs, and shopping carts. The added mass improves sound deadening. Specify 6mm for retail stores, clinics, school classrooms, and hospitality corridors.
8mm SPC is the flagship. The thickest profile feels closest to real wood underfoot, offers the best sound insulation, and supports the heaviest wear layers (0.55mm+). Use 8mm for high-end residential, executive offices, boutique retail, and anywhere acoustic performance is critical. The trade-off is weight and cost - 8mm costs roughly double the 4mm equivalent.
A common mistake is over-specifying. A 4mm SPC with proper underlay is more than sufficient for a residential bedroom. Conversely, specifying 4mm in a busy cafe will lead to premature wear and customer complaints.
