When wholesale buyers and project contractors evaluate flooring options from China, two products dominate the conversation: SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) and laminate flooring. Both are click-lock, both are affordable, and both are widely stocked - but they perform very differently in real-world conditions.
The core difference is the material. SPC is a rigid vinyl plank made from a blend of limestone powder and PVC. It is 100% waterproof, dimensionally stable, and tolerant of temperature swings. Laminate, by contrast, uses a high-density fiberboard (HDF) core with a photographic wood-look surface. Laminate excels at realism but is vulnerable to moisture at the joints.
For wet areas - bathrooms, kitchens, basements, laundries, and tropical-climate projects - SPC is the clear winner. Water will not swell the core, and the click joints stay sealed. Laminate can tolerate occasional spills if wiped promptly, but standing water or repeated exposure will cause edge swelling and surface bubbling.
For visual authenticity, laminate holds the edge. Modern EIR (embossed-in-register) laminate reproduces real wood grain with astonishing fidelity, including micro-bevels and hand-scraped textures. SPC has improved dramatically with deeper embossing and realistic bevels, but laminate still wins for projects where the look of natural hardwood is the priority.
On durability, look at the wear layer and AC rating. SPC wear layers of 0.3mm suit residential use, 0.5mm handles light commercial, and 0.55mm+ is recommended for commercial traffic. Laminate uses the AC abrasion class scale: AC3 for residential, AC4 for light commercial, AC5 for heavy commercial. A 12mm AC4 laminate can outlast a 4mm SPC in a busy office.
Budget-wise, SPC has fallen in price as manufacturing scaled in China. A 4mm SPC plank now competes directly with 8mm AC3 laminate on landed cost. Thicker SPC (6-8mm) commands a premium. For value projects, an 8mm AC3 laminate is still the most economical option per square meter.
Installation is similar for both - floating click-lock over a flat subfloor. SPC is heavier and slightly more difficult to cut, requiring a carbide-tipped blade. Laminate cuts cleanly with a standard saw. Underfloor heating works with both, but SPC tolerates higher temperatures (up to 28°C) without deformation.
For SHUCHAN FLOORING buyers, the simplest rule: choose SPC for wet or high-traffic areas, choose laminate for visual impact and dry rooms. Many successful distributors carry both lines, using SPC for kitchens and baths and laminate for living rooms and bedrooms in the same project.
