Skirting boards (baseboards) are the last five percent of a flooring project, and the first thing the eye sees when they are wrong. Order them as an afterthought from a local supplier and the color never quite matches the floor; order them from the same factory as the flooring and the skirting is covered in the identical decor paper, cut from the same production batch. That single sourcing decision is the difference between a floor that finishes itself and one that fights itself at every wall.
Color matching works because the skirting surface uses the same decorative layer as the planks. At SHUCHAN, skirting in a given decor is produced alongside the flooring of that decor - same paper, same press run, same UV finish - so a Grey Oak skirting meets a Grey Oak floor with no visible seam in tone. When a perfect match matters most (open-plan rooms, short walls, showroom displays), order skirting and flooring in the same purchase order so both come from the same batch.
Material choice follows the room and the climate. MDF skirting is the cost-effective standard for dry interiors - bedrooms, offices, retail - and takes paint and foil finishes cleanly. WPC skirting adds water resistance for kitchens, bathrooms and ground floors. SPC skirting is the fully waterproof option and the natural pair for SPC flooring lines, matching not only in color but in how the material handles humidity over the years. In tropical and coastal markets, skip unpainted MDF entirely: it is the skirting that swells first, years before the floor shows anything.
Height sets the character of the room. Sixty-millimeter boards read classic and compact; eighty millimeters is the current volume seller, tall enough to protect the wall and slim enough for modern interiors; one hundred and one hundred twenty millimeters create the clean architectural look that pairs with tall ceilings and minimalist finishes. Our wallboard profiles start at eighty millimeters for exactly that market. The practical rule: match the skirting height to the door and window reveals so trims line up, and never mix two heights in one sightline.
A skirting order is really a profiles order. The same HDF profile family that carries the skirting color also covers every transition the floor will meet: reducer profiles where the floor drops to tile, T-molding at equal-height junctions and doorways, quarter-round against existing skirting you are keeping, end caps at sliding tracks, and stair tread plus stair nosing for steps. Order the full profile set with the floor - in the same decor, in the same container - because sourcing a matching reducer three months later is where color batches drift and mismatch becomes visible.
Quantity planning is simple but worth doing before the quote. Measure the perimeter of every room, subtract door openings, and add five to ten percent for cutting waste and future repairs. A typical apartment needs surprisingly few meters of skirting against its floor area - but the mistake we see is ordering floor and skirting coverage from the same number. Calculate skirting in linear meters, not square meters, and let the factory quote per meter (indicative wholesale for color-matched skirting runs about USD 1-3.4 per meter depending on material and height).
Installation is faster than the floor itself. Skirting mounts to the wall, not the floor: adhesive for smooth plaster and drywall, clip systems where walls are uneven or frequent access is needed, and concealed nailing for MDF profiles that will be painted. Install after the floor is laid, leaving a two-millimeter shadow gap underneath for expansion - click floors float, and pinning the skirting to the plank is the classic cause of bulging walls a year later.
The common mistakes, collected: buying skirting locally after installation and living with a near-match; ordering from the same factory but a different production batch, which is the same mistake wearing a better uniform; unpainted MDF in humid rooms; forgetting transition profiles until the installer is standing at the tile step; and pinning skirting through the floating floor. Every one of them is avoided by one decision: order the skirting and profile set with the flooring, from the same line, in the same order.
SHUCHAN FLOORING manufactures MDF, WPC and SPC skirting and the full HDF profile family color-matched to our SPC and laminate decors, in 60 to 120 mm heights with custom profiles and OEM branding available. Skirting consolidates with your flooring in the same container from Shanghai - one order, one shipment, one consistent color. Send us your decor list and room perimeter measurements and we will return a matched skirting and profiles quotation with the floor quote.
